It's also surprising how Hepburn and Boyer got away with slamming each other with insults of their promiscuity. A better director such as George Cukor (who was familiar with Hepburn) would have made the scenes much more enjoyable. Everyone hates Break of Hearts, but I wonder if its critics have actually seen the film recently or are merely relying on Andre Sennwald's negative review in The New York Times. They honeymoon all over Europe and are happy back home until Constance finds him with a society divorcee and leaves him. Originally Break of Hearts was intended as a vehicle for Hepburn and John Barrymore. Middle-aged bride Ann Hamilton soon begins to suspect that her charming husband is really a psychotic who plans to murder her.
Yes, there is one big thing wrong with it. But the reddish-haired lady with a refined New England accent and the suave Frenchman--what an unusual combination The film begins with Boyer playing a very famous orchestra conductor and musician. It's as if the movie makers decided that, with Boyer and Hepburn on hand, no proper script was necessary. About an hour into this 80-minute BREAK OF HEARTS musical expose, drunken hot-shot orchestra conductor "Franz" offers all the guys in his "Cosmopolitan Symphony" a crack at knowing his wife "Constance" in the "Biblical Sense."

When her father decides to flee to England, young Sylvia Scarlett must become Sylvester Scarlett and protect her father every step of the way, with the questionable help of plenty others.
Of course, Hepburn, proving what every woman knows, stands by him as he falls into alcoholic despair, only to save the day when he realizes what she has known all along, that he needs her more than he ever previously cared to admit. Break of Hearts is a triple-hankie romance to swoon by, swelling with music by Bach, Brahms and other immortals and featuring two box-office legends at their most luminous. There isn't anything distinctive, bold, powerful, or even all that fun (MAJOR minus points for the bazillionth "girl/world" pairing in Rock 'n Roll Girl). They seem deliriously happy and go off on a wonderful honeymoon in Europe. While talking with his old music teacher, Professor Thalma, he meets Constance, an aspiring music composer.
Max Steiner's theme given to Constance as her "song of love" is gorgeous.
