John Ireland does a great job as the cowardly Bob Ford.. the James gang just having finished another robbery is on the run hiding out somewhere in Missouri,, Jesse is living under an alias.
But things didn't quite turn out right afterwords, and Ford was considered more-so a coward, a traitor for doing this act, and any gunslinger who could gun Ford down would then be seen as the baddest dude in the west. The story is built around a fictional rivalry between Ford and his eventual killer Edward Kelley (called John in the film) over a woman. When two US cavalrymen transporting a gold shipment get killed, US Army Intelligence investigator John Haven goes undercover to a mining and logging town to find the killers. I think this movie is more about Robert Ford than say Jesse James. Was this review helpful to you? Cynthy is beginning to realize that she is a liability to her manager, Harry Kane, because she will not leave Missouri. Kelley is disappointed when Cynthy accepts Bob's proposal, so he accepts the job as marshal. Cynthy tries to get a pardon for Bob, but the best offer she can get is for a 20-year stretch in prison. But there's more to it, at least under the surface, that Samuel Fuller gets to in his take on the legend of one man's existential downfall from killing his best friend, who happened to be the most feared- and yet most admired- bank robber in America for a short while. She is unreachable to Ford, he knew that as a fugitive their love could not survive, but he did not realize that as a cowardly killer, even though he was pardoned, the people would hate him and the odds would be that she would not accept him. He mends at Jesse's home in Missouri for six months, although Jesse's wife Zee doesn't trust him. She pleads with Bob to turn honest. She is beautiful and has an incredibly modern look for a film that was made in 1949, makes you think of Nicole Kidman. I Shot Jesse James is a 1949 American western film directed by Samuel Fuller about the murder of Jesse James by Robert Ford and Robert Ford's life afterwards.
