It is the story of an immigrant living in Saudia Arabia who falls in love with a woman and their relationship continues through letters. She regularly drinks until she’s sick and, most troubling of all, realises that she can’t remember her sister, “Apart from one moment: her death.”This book then turns into a remarkable journey, one in which Hodge slowly uncovers and confronts her repressed grief, while at the same time painting a colourful portrait of her family and the druggy, chaotic Chelsea milieu in which they lived. When Naser reads the note, his fate is sealed.The problem with this debut novel is that it is precisely what the title says it is: a story about the consequences of love.

Despite the dramatic cover design, it is a very plain novel, with a plot straight from the Mills & Boon/Harlequin stables, Middle-Eastern style: boy meets girl, society disapproves, it all ends in tears. “It’s our little secret.”Hodge relates all this with an extreme candour that highlights both the agony and the absurdity of being raised by a junkie. The author writes with a lot of frustration, anger and a sense of desperation that I could feel as a reader, which speaks a lot of the quality of this novel. I felt anger for them. Sulaiman Addonia, reveals a world that is staunch and rigid, and weaves a tale of danger and hope. His life from a little boy has been to serve others and survive, but Naser dreams of one day falling in love with a woman.
One of the most compelling things in the book is an interview Hodge conducts with Jan about the past: her mother’s honesty, and her memories of Candy, are “a revelation”.
