As far as accuracy is concerned those who think this version is true to Dumas have never seen the book.
Too bad they got stuck with this bomb. Given the length (and hence the capacity) of this mini series, and after Kevin Reynold's far-off 2002 version, I was hoping to see a visual duplication of the original storyline. The producers relied heavily on the stardom of their principal actor Gerard Depardieu (1900, Greencard) and on what they thought was a script, true to the book (that is to the second half of the novel only). In their efforts to remain true to the book, the production has removed all traces of life, and passion (for what is revenge, without passion?) Or maybe even you have seen the poor excuse of a movie with the same title made just a few years ago (after this mini-). With Gérard Depardieu, Ornella Muti, Jean Rochefort, Pierre Arditi. Woof. 24 out of 29 found this helpful. A TV adaptation of the classic Alexandre Dumas novel. A TV mini-series adaptation of the classic Alexandre Dumas novel. After many years in prison, the old Abbe dies, and Edmond escapes disguised as the dead body. Even worse, instead of creating an adequate film adaption of Dumas novel, the scriptwriters either omitted the best parts of the book or they followed the weaker chapters of the tale too closely, simply transferring it's sometimes overhanging twists and plots to the screen. THe story is compelling and the characterisations by all of the actors are amazing. He escapes the island and proceeds to transform himself into the wealthy Count of Monte Cristo as part of his plan to exact revenge against his enemies as Villefort (Pierre Arditi) and Danglars (Michael Aumont) . The Abbe tells Edmond of a fantastic treasure hidden away on a tiny island, that only he knows the location of. Alexander Dumas would be very thankful for this version of The Count of Montecristo. In the TV-version other characters have got bigger roles. The period costuming is good, the horses and carriages good, the acting is acceptable but given the talents of the assembled cast not the best effort from any.
Didier Decoin, the author of the screenplay, who incidentally is the film director Henri Decoin's son, took the liberty to invent characters of his own, and deeply modified the meaning of Dumas' story. Once you get into it, you will not be able to turn the television off. But everything is off in this version. The Count of Monte Cristo [DVD] [1998] Gérard Depardieu] (Actor), Jean Rochefort (Actor) Rated: PG. Jean Valjean, a galley slave who was sent to prison for stealing food, is now released after serving ... I've seen many versions of tCoMC, and by far this is the most lethargic, torpid and pointless version of them all. 6 out of 8 found this helpful. There have been numerous attempts to bring Dumas classic novel of romance, betrayal and revenge to the screen. 8 out of 19 found this helpful. The Count of Monte Cristo (TV Mini-Series 1998) cast and crew credits, including actors, actresses, directors, writers and more. The subtitling was very well handled, by the way. Screenplay adaptation was flawed from the beginning.
If you know the story, you know what they should have done, and you know what they probably did. After seeing this I started to appreciate the French in the film world in a very different way. 8 out of 13 found this helpful. I thought the entire cast was excellent, particularly Depardieu, who is completely masterful and magnetic as the Count. 22 out of 31 found this helpful. I personally was bitter - you can't take a story of revenge and remake it into Harlequin romance novel. I found myself an eight year old all over again.
It's a shame because the book is a great story and this film belongs with the genera of miniseries that take their cues from soap operas. Set design and production values are excellent. Abbé tells Edmond of a fantastic treasure hidden away on a tiny island, that only he knows the location. Within six and a half hours of film, there is no introduction to the fate of Edmond Dantes, we never see his enemies build up the conspiracy against him, nor do we get more than a glimpse of his suffering in Château d'If and of his ever growing hatred. Was this review helpful to you? Then on to Victor Hugo, Balzac, George Sand, and others, all recommended by those lovely ladies in the local library. They were so close, and that just made the experience that much more sour. I mean, you'd think they'd have a pretty good idea of how the ending is, since in this case, the book has only been around for a couple hundred years. Life is full of wonderful and unexpected joys.
