The scene is immediate and wild. Another short staircase brings us up to the attic, master bedroom, a cosy room at the top of the house from which we can hear the wind gusting on the other side of the roof.As I close my eyes, listening to the wind ruffle the bushes below, my mind begins to slow. Foregoing the latter we pay for our ingredients and within minutes we’re back inside the cottage, preparing a simple pasta dish to enjoy in front of the now throbbing heat of our third attempt at fire. Fortunately, the owners of the cottage have thoughtfully provided ample kindling, firelighters and logs – enough to accommodate my severe cack-handedness; at long last the practice pays off and a fire roars to life.We find supplies at the Windy Corner, the aptly named shop almost directly opposite the cottage. 14-day weather forecast for Whitstable. The Big Freeze was one of the coldest winters on record in the UKThe Beast from the East two years ago was pretty bad in Known as the Big Freeze, the winter of 1962-63 was one of the coldest on record in the UK – and the most bitter we’ve endured since 1740.It all started with a wintry outbreak on December 12, 1962 as the weather began to deteriorate.Ten days later, after persistently arctic conditions, an anticyclone formed over Scandinavia and brought in cold winds from Russia.Temperatures were so cold that the sea completely froze in Kent.On December 22, 1962, people in Herne Bay could barely believe their eyes when the sea iced over for up to a mile off the coast.Archive footage and pictures show how the sea turned from flowing water to a solid white sheet.Moored boats were left frozen in their place and people were walking out along the pier surrounded by ice and making their way across the frozen sea from the beach.Videos also showed children and animals playing in the snow as onlookers stood in awe of what was in front of them. And it wasn’t just the sea in Herne Bay – it also happened in Whitstable, while shipping on the River Medway was paralysed by ice and brought to a standstill. While the frozen sea didn’t last too long, the bitter winter weather did – for several months in-fact.Snow lay on the ground for 62 consecutive days and it wasn’t until March 6, 1963 that people woke up to no frost for the first time since early December. On a page on its website specifically dedicated to ‘severe winters’, the Met Office says: “With temperatures so cold the sea froze in places – 1963 is one of the coldest winters on record.“Bringing blizzards, snow drifts, blocks of ice, and temperatures lower than -20C, it was colder than the winter of 1947, and the coldest since 1740.“Mean maximum temperatures in January were below 0C in several places in southern England and Wales, more than 5C below average.“Mean minimum temperatures were well below freezing.
