But she wasn't talking about protest signs, standing up to the Man, and knowing your rights. Gibson and his classmate Allison then take a long road trip out to Cali, and both foil each other's plans. The book takes place in 1968 and three sisters are sent from Brooklyn, NY to Oakland, CA to stay with their mother, who left when they were babies. This didn't just blow my socks off; it blew them through space and time. The girls looked so strong and I had to know where they were going. This book has one of the rarest characters in literature, especially among children's stories: Cecile, self-named Nzilla, is a poet, an artist, a printer, a Black Panther, and a "crazy" mother who abandoned her three children. She decides to do something about it. My mother, Miss Essie, named me 'NoMo' immediately after my birth. But no mother should tell her children to their faces that she should have aborted them — even if she harbors that feeling in her heart. Delphine is the oldest and cares for her other sisters. A truly beautiful book, and sadly, the issues of racism, poverty, and inequality are still current. The one political group so difficult to write about that you can't find them in a single children's book (aside from It’s 1968, and 11-year-old Delphine Gaither has her hands full playing mother to her two little sisters, 9-year-old Vonetta, and 7-year-old Fern. One Crazy Summer Summary When Delphine and her two younger sisters, Fern and Vonetta, head out to Oakland to meet up with their runaway mom after four years, they're not sure what to expect. To help him find his way, his friend George invites Hoops to come with him and his sister to spend the summer on Nantucket. This book was a TOTAL SOCK-OBLITERATING EXPERIENCE.This book is a dramatic revisionist history of the Black Panther Party. She's a bad mother. This book was different I’ve never read anything about black panthers and how much adults and children where involved secretly. That's it. This is the first book of hers book I've read but it won't be the last. When I heard that her book was about the Black Panthers, however, my interest was piqued. I think Nzila, nee Cecile, could have followed the example of Ruth First, who was feeling the same pulls between family and justice during the same years.kids who enjoy historical fiction stories & stories with a girl narratorWow, what a trip, as we used to say back in ’68. Just one small quote:This was so great - it's going on to the (virtual) shelf of MG books that present difficult, even painful family dynamics with a light and humorous touch. Her sisters look up to her. The panther characters in this book seem angry, dogmatic, and tone-deaf tI have mixed feelings about this book. I've never read anything by this author, and decided to check it out based on its cover. This is the first book of hers book I've read but it won't be the last. Their mother doesn't want them there, so I can't imagine why their father thought this was a good idea. Want to read more from this author.Simply wonderful. It was also great to learn about the type of summer camp the Black Panthers ran in many communities. Delphine is growing up under tough circumstances. It would have enhanced the story immensely for author Williams-Garcia to have provided a little more background on these important issues, without detracting from the story.“Cecile made it sound like it was no big deal. There was a chapter that takes place in San Francisco.I have mixed feelings about this book. We sing our own nice tune to drown out ugly.”“It was a strange, wonderful feeling. Better yet, read the book. I like to believe I was dreaming up a good story and wouldn’t budge until I was finished. Just one small quote:Three young girls are sent to visit their estranged mother in Oakland during the summer of 1968. January 26th 2010 One Crazy Summer is a 1986 romantic comedy film written and directed by Savage Steve Holland, and starring John Cusack, Demi Moore, Bobcat Goldthwait, Curtis Armstrong and Joel Murray. The friends Crazy Summer begins when they pickup Cassandra on the way--she's being chased by a motorcycle gang. Upon arrival Cecile immediately lets the girls know that she doesn’t want them there and that they better not bother her peace and quiet.
Even now, my daughters call me 'Pokey Mom', because I slow poke around when they want to go-go-go. There is a sudden, sentimental, and entirely unbelievable character change at the end. Author has a wonderful style of writing drawing characterizations of the sisters through their dialogue and age appropriate reactions to the setting and situations throughout their "crazy summer." But the book kind of leads you to believe that she's going to turn out to be an OK person. Which is OK, I understand not all people are awesome.
