Veronesi, however, is by far the better writer from the new Italian generation that has emerged in the past few years. Although the premise is rather wonderful, the protagonist is egocentric, shallow and macho, a perfect match to all my prejudices of Italian men. I got the same moods as reading Salinger - the events and personages may seem trivial or even vulgar, but they are just details in bigger picture, which tells a story about special spirituality in everyday existential mess, about overcoming drama and coming back to the inner source, to the true nature.
It starts out as a joke, but turns into a very serious desire to stay there.
