Not only does it contain one of the most powerful hooks I've ever come across, but, in between scenes of grisly murders and exciting chases, Koontz aims to teach readers a little something about life. This story is loosely based on the discovery of the B-24 "Liberator" bomber the "Lady Be Good" that was found in the Libyan desert after the crew got lost on their 1st bombing mission to Italy. After her visits, these people commit suicide in horrific ways. However, I also think the book could have been shorter and been much better. After finding a synth based on a young Shaun, it is revealed that the real Shaun was kidnapped in 2227, sixty years prior to the Sole Survivor's release from cryogenic sleep, and is now an old man who goes by "Father," as well as the current director of the Institute. Unfortunately, these two themes were abandoned near the end, and the book concluded with magic and existential concepts. While at the first half of the movie we get some very atmospheric scenes and creepy main theme, it quickly all falls apart.

We only get some idea of what's really going on very near the end. The lovely young lass runs afoul of a colorful array of evil oddballs who all treat her like an ... Names mean nothing to the dead. Who, after all, could ever truly understand? He approaches her and sets off a series of events that make him question if the death of his family and 300 others was the intentional work of officials attempting to cover up something that could possibly change mankind for all time. He finds a purpose for living once he realizes he may be the only person left alive to expose the truth.I discovered once I got into this book that I remembered the movie based on it (very loosely based).

With Sole Survivor, we have a book where my rating sits in the middle.I liked this book. However, the story, itself, was drab. I find many books have an issue of just being too long which causes the story to drag. It was almost like reading the AIG website or a Jehovah Witness Watchtower pamphlet. This was an emotional rollercoaster, it was an insight into a grieving father's healing process and it also has a little bit of The firestarter by Stephen King.After not reading any of Dean Koontz particular brand of bizarre for quite a while, I probably appreciated this story more than I otherwise might have. Of course, I understand his desire to find the daughter he thinks is alive, but the way he acted really frustrated me and I never really felt any sympathy for him except in the beginning when I didn't know his character well enough. Once the device is built, the player character infiltrates the Institute to find their son. Kind of like using a gallon of words to express a spoonful of thought. A deadly virus turns a world's population into man-eating zombies, and when Quinn is bitten, the other Sliders frantically search for an antidote. It moved at a break neck speed for much of the book but I thought it petered out and was somewhat anti climactic in like the last 20 pages. Sole Survivor unfolds at a heart-stopping pace, as a desperate chase and a shattering emotional odyssey lead Joe to a truth that will force him to reassess everything he thought he knew about life and death — a truth that, given the chance, will rock the world and redefine the destiny of humanity. The Marx Brothers try to help the owner of a circus recover some stolen funds before he finds himself out of a job.
