Below a prominent brow, green eyes regarded Erik intently as he explained that he was an RCMP officer escorting a prisoner to face charges in Grande Prairie.Erik swallowed hard. Shaben cuts right to the chase and discusses the night of the crash, where Vogel miscalculated High Prairie’s landing strip, going on to document the fourteen hours the survivors spent in a snowstorm, waiting for military Search and Rescue to locate them.
Readers who are into survival stories but feel like they've read them all might find this one a welcome departure.Fascinating book. He laid his head back and felt something jut into the back of his neck from the rear cargo hold directly behind his seat. Erik had been in and out of cloud for most of his outbound flight from the small northern Canadian city of Grande Prairie, Alberta, and had watched wet snow continue to fall. A lot of This is the true story of a 1980s plane crash in Alberta.
It gave just enough detail to be fascinating when reading about safety regulations and airlines. He was holding his handcuffed wrists in the air in front of him.Scott studied the man beside him. The entire story is just kind of blah. “The crash’s impact on my father, and the unlikely friendships that formed between the survivors lodged the event firmly in my psyche,” she writes. This is a modern story of...COUNTING COUPIn this extraordinary work of journalism, Larry Colton journeys ... There was no way he'd be off the ground by his scheduled departure time of 7:00.His only hope was that tonight would be a repeat of last night and that there wouldn't be passengers bound for the small communities of High Prairie and Fairview, which had tiny airports with no air traffic control. All four men had crises of some kind about what direction their lives should take, once they had been rescued. What a waste of a good story. Not a bad book that was written by the daughter of a small air plane crash surviver in the north of Canada in 1984.
But he was a different person, more subdued and “quietly haunted,” writes Shaben.
Let us know what’s wrong with this preview of The main problem is that the cover blurbs did not match what was inside. As a high-profile elected official, people often recognized him and he prided himself on being friendly and engaging, even at times like this when he felt utterly drained.
Wrong. Every line in this story rings true. It was a well written, tight and emotional book that really delved into the lives of the men who survived that plane crash. When he got to the plane, the fuelling service hadn't yet arrived and he had to scramble to get the tanks filled. Though the book's propulsive pace slackens in the final sections, dealing with the crash's aftermath--blame was showered on both the airline's corner-cutting and on the luckless young pilot, who was frank about his errors and faced a long redemption--this is a complex, chilling narrative rendered with depth and precision, engaged in both its characters and the larger social moment (the crash led to recommendations for commuter air reform, not always followed in the years since). tangling with an unexpected question, posed to him by a well-meaning nurse. I did receive an advance copy for volunteering to submit a review- I would happily pay for this book.
(And FYI: Holy shit. Discover the shocking and fascinating true story of one of the most dramatic naval events Gordon often travelled to Edmonton for work and that morning he'd caught a ride to the city with a friend to attend a meeting.
And to think how I found it.
That Shaben can present this horror in such a well-rounded manner speaks volumes and is indicative as to the calibre of her writing. I had no idea about these frequent small plane crashes. A while back, for the umpteenth time, I came across this quote. The compact luggage compartment was completely full and there appeared to be nothing separating him from the cargo in the rear hold. And not even close to mediocre in the survival/adventure genre this book is trying to be a part of.A solid and often moving account of a small plane crash (and its aftermath) in Northern Canada in 1984 that killed 6 but left 4 survivors: the pilot, a politician (the author's father), a police officer, and the prisoner he was transporting.
Carol Shaben is an award-winning writer, and this book is thorough, fast-paced and extremely well written.Pretty good read. He wanted to close his eyes and sleep. I couldn't put it down.
By the time they finished, he was behind schedule.
