However, Kevin reveals that Gordon's safety valve was not reassembled back into him when he was streamlined. Gordon states a dislike in entering in a competition alongside engines like his brother, though Thomas states that he himself would love to. Sir Topham Hatt and the other Sodor engines are very proud of Thomas. Soon, a ship arrives at the docks and several engines come out of it. Thomas finally reveals to Ashima his insecurities about not being good enough to be entered into the competition and she consoles him ("You Can Only Be You"), saying that she finds him perfect just the way he is and that he should just be himself.

This gets Thomas noticed by Sir Topham Hatt and Ashima winning the Shunting Challenge. It also stars the voices of Rasmus Hardiker, Kerry Shale, Christopher Ragland, Nigel Pilkington, Rob Rackstraw, Teresa Gallagher and Keith Wickham, with Mark Moraghan narrating.

Meanwhile, at the Dieselworks, Diesel devises a trick that involves disguising Den, Dart, and Paxton as trucks, so as to trick Sir Topham Hatt into entering him into the competition instead of Henry ("I'm Full of Surprises"). Thomas soon races to the Great Railway Show on the mainland, and is even forced to jump over the Vicarstown Bridge while in a hurry. She suggests he partake in the Shunting competition. After Percy drops out of the Shunting Challenge (which Ashima is also competing in), Thomas is told by Emily to enter into it.

She then asks him if he is any good at shunting and tells him to take part in the shunting challenge.

Meanwhile, Gordon is at the Steamworks being streamlined when Thomas comes in, asking Victor to have him brightly painted for the Great Railway show. Meanwhile, Henry is entered in the Test of Strength (only to come in last place), James and Emily compete in the best decorated engine (though neither of them win it) and Gordon is entered in the race alongside Flying Scotsman. Ashima, a beautifully-painted tank engine from India accidentally bumps Thomas in her hurry to try and make the ferry, nearly pushing him over the edge into the water. At The Great Railway Show, Henry loses the strength competition, James and Emily lose the Best Decorated Engine award and, due to not waiting to have his safety valve installed, Gordon's boiler explodes and he loses the race ("The Shooting Star Is Coming Through"). There, he sees a large green engine with two tenders. Thomas is about to win the Shunting Challenge when Ashima is about to come across a flatbed Vinnie had earlier knocked over and sacrifices his chance of winning for Ashima.

Vinnie ends up cornering Philip, though Vinnie is soon held back by Thomas and Ashima, leading to Philip escaping and Vinnie crashing into some pylons. Though every engine on Sodor wants to take part ("Will You Won't You"), Sir Topham Hatt has not made up his mind yet, and Thomas fears he won't be picked to go to the competition. Extremely forlorn, Thomas thinks he has missed his chance until he hears her singing as she fills up with coal. Unfortunately, Thomas gets teased for wanting to compete in it. Thomas later tells Percy and Philip about Ashima, to which Philip tells Thomas that engines like her are nothing but trouble. But after getting an idea to be streamlined for the competition ("Streamlining"), he passes his idea on to Sir Topham Hatt, who chooses Gordon to be streamlined instead. Ashima tries to ask some of the other engines about how to get to the mainland (to no avail) and takes Annie and Clarabel instead. At the Steamworks, Thomas suggests to Sir Topham Hatt that he have an engine enter the Best Decorated Engine competition.
