Some folks get their acts together and carry on, and others really take a flying leap into full-on insanity.
Perrotta's take on the role of family and connection are what is most interesting and hopeful in the book. What a massive premise to try and pull off. The unbelieving majority will be left to suffer from five months to a year of war, disease and climatological upheaval. After that, the earth will go pop and any surviving pagans will, presumably, be sent straight to hell, where the temperature is high and all the piped-in music is by the Singing Senators, featuring John Ashcroft and Trent Lott. It’s hard to tell how many people actually believe in this lurid idea, but Camping’s video assurances that the rapture was going to occur on May 21, 2011, quickly went viral; one site offered a digital countdown to the big nonevent. I wasn't sure when I started reading it that it would be a preachy book regarding "rapture" but found the characters interesting and how the "event" impacted the lives of those Leftover! Anyway, the thing about Perrotta is that his work, as terrific or as pedestrian as it is, is insanely readable and "getting into it" is easy and fun.
Some Christians believe that when the rapture comes, those who have accepted Jesus Christ as their personal savior will immediately be whisked off to heaven. Would some of us collapse? First off I won this on a First Reads Giveaway as an Advanced Reader's issue. The fact that life after The Rapture was central to the story made me that much more curious. Everyone goes on living their life.
I remember the people who have disappeared from my life or roads not taken.

Blah. This The Leftovers review contains spoilers.. Goodreads helps you keep track of books you want to read. His characters aren't always sympathetic, their motivations aren't always understandable, but his books always make you think. Mr. Orwell's animals exist in their own right, with a narrative as individual as it is apt in political parody.
I was not disappointed. Most of Tom Perrotta's novels have been wry examinations of society and its foibles. The season does cover the whole book and since there is no second book, season two will be "reboot" of season one, according to HBO.Tom Perrotta, I don't know. Nothing. Like we are certain it will happen, it is just a matter of when and how.

. situation which kind of ended badly for some characters. I really liked how the minister loses the plot and starts dirt files on all the locals who departed, trying to ascertain in his own mind why has he sacrificed his life to serve a God that has left him behind? If they feel guilty, they may seek out the remnant.
Okay so this book veered away from the show around the 75% mark and didn't come close to any of the wicked cool bizarre shit that happens in it. As “The Leftovers” winds to its almost foregone conclusion, the dismayed reader learns that smoking is the least ominous sacrament practiced by her new soul mates.Perrotta began his exploration of the stress points between religion and secular American life in his previous novel, Yet the novel isn’t completely bleak. . It's much more focused on what happens after these huge events - who is left behind and how do they deal? Laurie Garvey drifts somewhat aimlessly into this cult and then becomes subsumed by it. Tom Perrotta … comfortingly televisual. It can't be the rapture though, at least not the skewed Christian version of it, because a lot of Christians are left behind - devastated that their version of God has forsaken them, and a lot of people from varying faiths, including atheists and a few random celebrities have gone. The writing style is very simple, but not Hemingway-like in its simplicity, and straightforward but ultimately kind of boring. Your recently viewed items and featured recommendations
This one comes from the author of Election and Little Children. 8.8. great.
There just doesn’t seem like there’s room for that kind of warmth. It starts by explaining that on October 14th of an unspecified year, millions of people (the number is never revealed, though it seems to be a worldwide phenomena) suddenly and inexplicably disappear, seemingly vaporizing into thin air in a Rapture-like event. I will say that without having watched the show it would have been a little harder to maintain my interest, but the book was still a very good read and the idea of a Rapture is something that is very fascinating.
These are my 2 am musings.Though promoted as a novel about The Rapture or a Rapture-like event, fifty pages in you realize Though promoted as a novel about The Rapture or a Rapture-like event, fifty pages in you realize Tom Perrotta’s The Leftovers is a book that I really want to like.
. used to tape the girls, . His lines have a calm and unshowy clarity that makes the occasional breakout even more striking, as when Laurie smells a freshly unboxed takeout pizza, the aroma “as full of memories as an old song on the car radio.” Or when a suburban housewife recalls her husband’s job-related BlackBerry obsession, his mind “so absorbed in his work that he was rarely more than half there, a hologram of himself.” Lines like that offer their own form of rapture. Our bodies and minds just keep manufacturing more of it. But something seemed off. Would others of us go on, one foot in front of the other, as we did before the world turned upside down? The Rev.
