Experienced feeling drawn in to many differing aspects of individual struggles and trials with many well acted out and believable scenes. For this movie, they took the oldest, crustiest Hollywood actors and handed them roles that might have been better portrayed by younger lesser knowns. Sadly the film like many other warm time films before it has a very american weighted point of view. The latter is the focus of Monuments Men based upon a real unit of American soldiers tasked with tracking down art taken by the Germans during World War II.

The Nazis really did want it all and when they realised that they wouldn't achieve this then they were determined that our history would be erased. Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 27, 2019 No photograph can do that justice. This movie is no exception except this time it’s a small band of seven entirely ill prepared art specialists rescuing stuff from Nazi clutches. Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 15, 2014 I thought this was a very good film, I have studied the second world war and much of this film is true with that bit of added Americanism which I expect from American movies. Better than many say but could have been better still. Clooney, who also directs and co-wrote the screenplay, may have been aiming at a sort of Oceans Eight Inglourious Art Basterds, but what he delivers is drab, uninvolving and emotionally flat as a canvas.Clooney has transformed a fascinating true-life tale into an exceedingly dull and dreary caper pic cum art-appreciation seminar — a museum-piece movie about museum people. An amazing story and an amazing cast don’t always make an amazing film. Worth a look at. Some of it is good and some is funny although it is not a comedy. A miniature Eiffel 2/5 from me.Big names doesn't necessarily make it a big hit. It also analyzes reviews to verify trustworthiness.Sorry, we failed to record your vote. Too light for drama, not funny enough for comedy; it’s unlikely anyone will ever risk their lives for this.Things don’t exactly improve once the action shifts entirely to European soil... yet Clooney occasionally shows a surer hand.Clooney can't figure out what kind of story this is, he too often slips into pandering mode, including in his own performance, which is filled with too many smiles and speeches. This amiably ancient film is all too stiff - as if Clooney feared that any sudden noise or action would wake his performers up.While the film is often playful, it never attempts to be particularly funny.Clooney and Heslov fail to settle on a tone, or at least tie the contrasting moods together.Episodic and never entirely cohering... has patches of excellence, but is inadequately constructed.Normally I shy away from any movies that feature wars in a big way but this movie was completely different. He also directed this, and probably that's why, all the way through, I kept thinking "What a great story-line. This was quite a big miss. They stole the cultural treasures of the continent.

Somebody else could have made a better job of it." Discovering art in castles and mines, they race against time as the Nazis scramble to destroy everything they can. The story however is a good one and does highlight one of the less well known episodes of WW2, the theft of art works from public and private collections across Europe.

It is a story with distinctly memorable scenes of danger, courage, daring, humor, tenderness, commitment, comradery and sacrifice for a larger ideal -- a preservation of the world's cultural heritage which serves as an antithesis to the human savagery of war and unbridled greed.

While it is not the main focus, the film does not shy away from the appalling truths about Germany's hatred for and genocide of Jewish people (or everyone who was sent to their deaths at Concentration Camps). what cannot be done except in person is teach.

A miniature Eiffel 2/5 from me.Big names doesn't necessarily make it a big hit. But as the Monuments Men, as they were called, found themselves in a race against time to avoid the destruction of 1,000 years of culture, they would risk their lives to protect and defend mankind's greatest achievements.Take an amazing true story of a mission to save Europe’s great artworks from the Nazis, add a great cast, including the likes of George Clooney, Cate Blanchett, Matt Damon, Bill Murray and John Goodman, a decent budget and solid cinematography and you should get a thrilling tale of wartime derring-do. The original, to and artist, is like meeting the artist first hand. Watch this on a Sunday when your snoozing on the couch. Don't waste your time.
