I agree with another reviewer that this probably would have worked better as an Abbott & Costello movie. Director Orson Welles saw "The Black Cat" and was so impressed by cinematographer Stanley Cortez's atmospheric lighting and angling that he hired Cortez to photograph The Magnificent Ambersons (1942) which is also set largely inside a Victorian-era mansion. Toby is Linda Turner's pet cat. As her health fails, her greedy relatives gather in anticipation of her death.

Though he is concerned for his daughter's safety, Tim Turner wholly approves of her activities as The Black Cat and her desire to bring justice to the world. But Horne is more attracted to the mysterious fantasy of The Black Cat than to the glamorous Linda Turner, and Linda seems determined to keep the reporter at arm's length until he commits to her rather than his fantasy woman, even though both are the same woman. Broderick Crawford stars in an early role. Yes, it's fairly repetitive of many other such thrillers or comedies but it's pretty entertaining at times.
